"Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing." So said the great Abraham Lincoln. I have been thinking about a person's character a lot lately. What generates respect for a person in our society today and what totally diminishes it? Dwight Eisenhower also said, The qualities of a great man are "vision, integrity, courage, understanding, the power of articulation, and profundity of character."
How many of us can truly say we have all those qualities? Think about the people that we have personal relationships with. Do you have the courage to stand up to them when they suggest activities that compromise your integrity? Does your life reflect what you truly believe or is it a shadow of society's profile for a "normal, average" person?
Dare to understand yourself, your flaws and your virtues. Don't be afraid to be you. When the shadow of death lies over you and you reflect on your life, let it be a time of rejoicing..of recognizing that you embodied you...your own unique self that held firm to what you knew was right...depart with an autobiography that can be read and treasured by all.
